Attendance and Holidays

We believe that every child has the right to an education and that attendance at school has a big impact on a child's learning.

At Bedlinog Community Primary School, we take great pride in ensuring that attendance is maintained at a high level and that this is promoted and celebrated right across the school. While your child is with us, we will monitor their attendance very closely, in order to secure the very best education for them. We put in place interventions where attendance is dropping, but also reward pupils where attendance is excellent!

Here are just some incentives we use:

  • Weekly Class Competitions:- with a special score board in the hall to show attendance and a trophy for the winning class.
  • Individual rewards:- for pupils with 97%+ attendance we have special reward packs to celebrate this attendance. We also put in place special rewards for pupils who show improved attendance.
  • 100% Reward :- Each term a special treat day is organised for pupils with 100% that term.

We regularly check the attendance of pupils and, should any concerns arise regarding your child's attendance, we will be in touch to try and help get your child's attendance back on track!

More information about attendance can be found below, along with our policy for attendance.

Holidays in Term Time

As Parents/Carers, you have a legal responsibility to ensure your child's attendance at school. During the academic year, pupils are at school for 190 days and at home for 175 days. Holidays should be taken during the School holiday period in order not to disrupt your child's education.

In line with Welsh Government guidance, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council has asked Head Teachers not to Authorise requests for holidays in term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Holidays during term time disrupt your child's education and impacts unfavourably on their learning.

If the Head Teacher refuses your application and you still take your child out of school, the absences will be treated as unauthorised. Bedlinog Community Primary School reserve the right, in certain circumstances, to request that the educational Welfare service to issue parents/carers with a Fixed Penalty Notice under the education (Penalty Notice)(Wales) regulations 2013 for a holiday in term time.

If you are planning on taking your child on Holiday during Term time, please complete the 'Holiday in Term time' form in the school app as soon as possible. A full copy of the school policy for Attendance can be found on the policy section of our website.
